The Council of Mosques Tower Hamlets held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on October 19, 2024 at the London Muslim Centre.

The meeting was chaired by Maulana Shamsul Haque and conducted by Secretary General Sirajul Islam Hira.

Sumary:

The Annual Report and Accounts for 2023-24 were presented and approved by members.

A new CoM App, Mosques Directory and map of 53 mosques in Tower Hamlets was launched at the event.

The event began with brief updates from Detective Superintendent Vicky Tunstall, Head of Neighbourhood Policing for Tower Hamlets and Sufia Alam – Chair of Tower Hamlets Interfaith Forum.

Mayor Lutfur Rahman was the chief guest. He praised the Council of Mosques role in community service and social development.

The Mayor announced a £175 winter fuel payment for about 5,000 pensioners in December. The council has set aside £1 million for this fund.

The Mayor thanked the Police and highlighted efforts to combat drug dealing, with 2,000 dealers arrested and 2,000 addicts in rehabilitation programs.

Council President Maulana Shamsul Haque thanked members for their support despite financial challenges. He called for unity and continued support for the organisation’s work.

Other attendees included Deputy Mayor Maium Miah Talukdar, councilors, and representatives from member mosques.

The meeting showcased the CoM’s community work and collaboration with local government to address social issues in Tower Hamlets.  Information stalls from Hate Crime, InterFaith Forum , Parking Enforcement and Domestic Violence were present.
